Play Fortnite Cross-Platform on PS4 (and Everything Else)

BY MIAN AZHAR: Can you cross-play between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?  The answer used to be “no”, then it was “well, kinda” and now it’s a resounding yes.

After months of waiting, Sony has announced that PlayStation gamers can finally play Fortnite with their friends on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, iOS, and Android.

For cross-play to work, you’ll need an Epic Games account (as well as your PSN account, if you’re a PS4 player). You can create an account by clicking “Sign In” in the top right of the official Epic Games site and signing up.

After syncing your Epic account with your platforms of choice, you’ll also be able to sync your progress, making multiplatform gaming more viable than before.  However, if you want to play with friends on a different platform, you need to enable cross-platform play.

After firing up Fortnite, go into Battle Royale as you normally would, then open the options menu in the top right corner.  Select Epic Friends and press the person’s silhouette with a plus sign beside it.  Now you have to enter the friends you want to play with’s Epic Games account usernames. Enter your friend’s details and hit OK. Repeat until you’ve added all of your friends.  There are no further limitations as to the type of hardware they must be running.

Once your friends have accepted the invitation, you should be able to use the Party Finder to add them to your party and…wait for it…cross-play!

Friends who are online have an icon next to their username; this indicates what platform they are using, such as mobile, PlayStation 4, Xbox or PC. You can also see the regional servers.  It’s important that you know which platforms you are going to cross-play with if you are going take advantage of Fortnite Pro Settings. When users line up for cross-platform matchmaking, certain platforms are prioritized over others. The cross-play system is based on a unique platform hierarchy system in which the PC gets the top spot, then consoles, then mobile.

After what seems like an age of Sony refusing to play nice with other platforms, it is nice to finally be able to enjoy a game like Fortnite with our friends on other platforms.  Enjoy!
