Developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will also be compatible on next-gen consoles. The announcement was made via their official Twitter account.
We are happy to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will be backwards compatible with both next-gen consoles! Your PS4 copy of the game will work on PS5 on launch day. Anyone who buys the game on Xbox One will be able to play their copy on Xbox Series X when the console launches too!

The use of being backwards compatible is a bit confusing – it is forward compatible, really – but it is good news that those who buy Cyberpunk 2077 on their current-gen PS4 or Xbox One will also be able to play it on their PS5 or Xbox Series X console.
In a follow-up Tweet, the developers also confirmed that an upgraded version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released at a later date.
A later upgrade to Cyberpunk 2077, taking full advantage of the next-gen hardware, will be available for free.

It will be interesting to see whether the upgrade, which is noted to be free, will also make its way to PC players who buy the game close to release.
Cyberpunk 2077 is due for release on 17th September 2020.
