PS4 Boss Thinks Nintendo Switch Is “Good For Core Gamers”

The Nintendo Switch has generated a lot of interest since its announcement. Now the PlayStation Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, has revealed he thinks it’s a “very unique system.”

Speaking to DigitalSpy, Shuhei said “[i]t’s very interesting that they’ve designed the system to work well with more conventional games in terms of inputs and buttons, so I think it’s good for core gamers and their marketing message focused on that.”

When asked whether Sony consider the Nintendo Switch as a competitor to the Playstation 4, and PS4 Pro, Yoshida said “I think they’re going to cover a new market for themselves.” This suggests that Sony believe Nintendo is operating in a different lane; the Playstation and Switch can co-exist.

Shuhei’s positive comments come after Xbox boss Phil Spencer said “I’m always impressed with their ability to state a bold vision and build a product that delivers on that vision.”

It would be interesting to see whether the bosses of Nintendo’s console counterparts would be adding positive comments to the pot should the Switch be revealed to have the hardware power to challenge the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio on a performance level.

There has always been the feeling that the Playstation and Xbox have been for hardcore gamers, while Nintendo have mopped up the casual market.  The Nintendo Switch has the potential to be a huge success, especially given the huge level of interest already garnered that was not given to the Wii-U. With the power to support more AAA third-party titles, we could be looking at Nintendo’s best-selling console to date.
