You Can Now Play Pokemon on Twitter

The best thing to happen in 2021 so far

I thought that I’d played Pokemon on just about every platform possible.  From the original Game Boy through to emulations on the PC (don’t judge), I’ve played and loved Pokemon on everything other than the Switch (one day…one day…).

Well, now there is one more platform to play Pokemon on: Twitter.

I have no idea what kind of coding witchcraft has gone on in the background, but programmer Constantin Liétard has managed to get Pokemon Red working inside his Twitter avatar for the general public to enjoy.

There are a few points to note here: the action doesn’t take place in real-time, and players share a game, rather than going on their own adventure.  All the same, it is amazing that this sort of thing is even possible.

To play, players reply to Constantin’s pinned tweet with an input (up, down, left, right, A, B, start and select).  The most popular Tweeted input is emulated into the Twitter avatar each 15 seconds.

If you want to get in on the action, you can head over to the Twitter page now, but if you want to collaborate with the existing player base to determine where Red should go next, you can head over to the page’s Discord server.

Which game would you like to see emulated next?  Perhaps some Legend of Zelda, or some Tetris?
